WhatsApp to introduce usernames instead of phone numbers, similar to Telegram and Signal

WhatsApp is on the brink of introducing a significant upgrade that promises to transform user interactions on its platform. In a move aimed at enhancing user privacy, the messaging giant will soon allow individuals to create unique usernames, thereby removing the necessity of sharing phone numbers to start conversations. This feature has been observed in the latest beta versions for iOS and is actively being developed for WhatsApp Web, reflecting the company's commitment to improving security and reducing the potential for spam and scams. Historically, WhatsApp users have needed to disclose their phone numbers to connect with others, raising serious privacy concerns—especially for women and those cautious about fraud. By enabling communication through usernames, WhatsApp seeks to tackle these challenges directly. Users will now have the option to choose a distinct identifier that serves as a replacement for their phone number in chats and group discussions, allowing them to engage with others without revealing their actual contact information unless they choose to do so. To maintain a secure and consistent experience, WhatsApp will enforce strict guidelines regarding usernames. Each username must be unique, preventing duplication and ensuring that users cannot select names already in their contact list. These measures are designed to alleviate confusion, deter impersonation, and curb potential scams. Once a user successfully selects an available username, WhatsApp will celebrate the choice with a festive confetti animation. This username will be displayed in both private and group chats, taking the place of the user's phone number. Should a user opt to change their username later, WhatsApp will promptly inform others involved in ongoing conversations to ensure everyone is updated. Additionally, an upcoming enhancement to WhatsApp Web will allow users to check username availability and establish their chosen name even before the feature is fully rolled out. While the username functionality is not yet accessible to all beta testers, the current backend developments indicate a public launch could be imminent, likely within the next few weeks.
