WhatsApp brings back a BBM-style idea: Usernames, PIN-like keys to replace phone number sharing

WhatsApp is set to launch a significant update that will allow users to connect through unique usernames, eliminating the need to share phone numbers. This new feature, which is gradually rolling out, will let some users reserve their usernames ahead of a broader release later this year. This initiative draws inspiration from BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), where contacts were added using a unique PIN rather than exchanging personal numbers. WhatsApp is enhancing this concept by integrating usernames with optional numeric keys and implementing new anti-spam measures. Users can choose to be contacted solely through their usernames, keeping their phone numbers private when messaging new contacts for the first time. Alice Newton-Rex, WhatsApp’s vice president of product, emphasized that this feature is designed with privacy in mind. Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp will not offer a public directory of usernames or autocomplete suggestions, ensuring that individuals need to know the exact username to initiate contact. The company noted, "When someone new enters your life—be it a classmate, neighbor, or an acquaintance from an event—sharing a phone number can feel like a big leap. A phone number is personal and tied to numerous aspects of your life. Sometimes, a conversation doesn't necessitate sharing that information." In addition to usernames, WhatsApp will introduce optional numeric keys that act as short codes associated with each username. Users opting for this feature can require new contacts to provide both their username and the corresponding key before starting a conversation. This adds an extra layer of security against unwanted interactions, including those from scammers. WhatsApp's updated system also includes measures to limit the number of new contacts an account can reach out to, which is aimed at curbing spam and abuse. The platform's systems are designed to recognize and prevent patterns of misuse, making it more difficult for scammers to launch mass messaging campaigns. For those looking to reserve a username, WhatsApp mandates that usernames must be between three and 35 characters long. Businesses, creators, and organizations with existing Instagram or Facebook accounts will have the chance to secure matching usernames. Additionally, WhatsApp will reserve some usernames linked to celebrities and public figures to minimize the risk of impersonation. To reserve a username, users must have the latest version of WhatsApp, navigate to Settings, then Account, and finally Username. This feature will initially be accessible only on mobile devices, with no availability on WhatsApp Web or desktop applications at the outset. A specific timeline for the feature's launch in different countries has yet to be disclosed, but users will be notified within the app when it becomes available in their region.
