WhatsApp's username feature explained: How users can message without a phone number

WhatsApp, the popular messaging service owned by Meta, is currently testing a groundbreaking feature that will allow users to communicate through unique usernames instead of relying on phone numbers. This innovative approach aims to bolster user privacy by minimizing the need for individuals to disclose their personal contact information, thereby facilitating more flexible interactions within the app. For users familiar with username-based platforms, this could represent a significant shift for WhatsApp, which has traditionally depended on phone numbers for user identification since its inception. With this upcoming feature, users will be able to initiate voice and video calls using only their unique usernames, creating an additional layer of privacy. A spokesperson for WhatsApp expressed enthusiasm about the introduction of usernames, stating, "We’re excited to bring usernames to WhatsApp in the future to help people connect with new friends, groups, and businesses without having to share their phone numbers. This feature will add an extra layer of privacy for people and make it easier to reach businesses on WhatsApp. We’ll have more to share when it’s ready." The company clarified that this username feature will be optional for users. Initially, it was intended exclusively for WhatsApp Business accounts, but it is now set to be made available to all standard users as well. As for the timeline, reports suggest that the official rollout of the username feature is anticipated around June 2026. Prior to this, users might have the opportunity to reserve their usernames. This new feature will simplify the way users interact on WhatsApp. Instead of sharing phone numbers to connect with new contacts, users can utilize their usernames to reach out to businesses, join groups, or make calls. For businesses, WhatsApp will also introduce a Business-Scoped User ID (BSUID), which will serve as a unique identifier for each user. This will enable businesses to connect with customers without needing their phone numbers. With recognizable handles like @HDFCBank, customers will be able to locate and message businesses directly while retaining their privacy. This development is expected to enhance user engagement and assist businesses in establishing a strong brand identity through memorable usernames.
