WhatsApp adds an incognito mode in Meta AI chats

Meta has announced a significant update to WhatsApp, allowing users to engage in incognito conversations with its Meta AI chatbot. This new feature ensures that these discussions are conducted in a secure environment, keeping them completely private and inaccessible to anyone else. To initiate an incognito session, users can simply click on a new icon during one-on-one chats with the Meta AI. This feature will also be accessible through the dedicated Meta AI app and is expected to roll out over the next few months. Messages exchanged in incognito mode will not be saved, automatically disappearing once the chat is closed. Additionally, if the app is closed or the user's phone is locked, the session will end, and the AI will lose the context of the conversation. Alice Newton-Rex, VP of Product at WhatsApp, emphasized the importance of privacy, especially as users increasingly turn to AI for sensitive topics such as financial or health concerns. Meta has been developing secure AI chat capabilities within WhatsApp for some time, with previous features relying on a private processing infrastructure that maintains end-to-end encryption. The latest incognito chat feature utilizes the new Muse Spark model, introduced just last month, which enhances the AI's ability to handle private inquiries. Looking ahead, Meta is also working on a new feature called Side Chat. This will enable users to ask the Meta AI questions within group chats without alerting other participants, addressing privacy concerns even further. In contrast, current interactions require tagging messages for the AI's responses, which are visible to everyone in the chat. Meta's initiative to bolster private AI chats comes at a crucial moment, especially in light of recent legal discussions suggesting that AI chatbot conversations could potentially be used as evidence in court. With competitors like ChatGPT and Claude already offering incognito modes, the pressure is on for Meta to ensure user privacy in its AI offerings.
