WhatsApp is currently trialing a new premium subscription tier, akin to offerings from Instagram Plus and Snapchat+. This option allows users to pay for various customization features, including tailored icons, themes, and ringtones. However, the enhancements appear to be primarily aesthetic, lacking significant functional upgrades. Social media consultant Matt Navarra has noted the emergence of WhatsApp Plus, which the company has now officially acknowledged in a statement to TechCrunch. A Meta representative remarked, "WhatsApp is testing a new, optional subscription called WhatsApp Plus, aimed at users eager for more personalization and organizational tools in their experience." The premium offerings include expanded capabilities for pinned chats, custom lists, and new chat themes, with the initial phase of testing limited to a small group to collect user feedback. While specific pricing details haven't been disclosed, reports from WABetaInfo suggest a potential cost of €2.49 per month in Europe and 229 PKR (approximately $0.82) in Pakistan. Additionally, a one-month free trial is being extended to users. Among the new features, subscribers will be able to pin up to 20 chats—a significant increase from the three-chat limit available to free-tier users. They will also have the ability to customize themes, ringtones, and notification sounds for individual chat lists. Interestingly, there has been no indication that this subscription will eliminate ads from the Status feature, which WhatsApp began incorporating last year. In the past, WhatsApp charged a $1 subscription fee in select regions, but this was phased out in 2016 after Facebook acquired the platform. Since then, WhatsApp has focused on enabling businesses to connect with users and facilitating click-to-WhatsApp advertisements, which have proven lucrative for Meta. During their Q4 2025 earnings call, the company reported a 54% year-over-year revenue increase across its app family, reaching $801 million, largely fueled by paid messaging on WhatsApp. Although WhatsApp Plus is currently in a limited testing phase, it is unlikely to significantly impact the company's financial performance in the immediate future, given its vast user base of over 3 billion.
