WhatsApp is taking a significant step forward in securing user data by introducing passkey support for accessing encrypted backups. This innovative feature allows users to retrieve their backups using biometric methods such as fingerprint or facial recognition, or even the screen lock code from their previous devices. Historically, WhatsApp did not offer an encryption layer for chat backups, but in 2021, Meta implemented end-to-end encryption options for backup protection, enabling users to secure their data with passwords or 64-character encryption keys. However, the challenge with these methods was the need to remember the backup password or have the encryption key readily available during restoration. With the new passkey feature, users can bypass the hassle of remembering complex passwords or keys, making the recovery process much smoother. WhatsApp, which recently surpassed 3 billion active users, announced that this feature will gradually roll out to users over the coming weeks and months. To enable encrypted backups and check for the availability of passkeys, users can navigate through Settings > Chats > Chat backup > End-to-end encrypted backup.
