WhatsApp gets its own Instagram Notes-like feature

WhatsApp has unveiled a new feature reminiscent of Instagram Notes, designed to enhance user interaction within the popular messaging platform. This update allows users to share brief text updates that can be viewed by their contacts, offering a glimpse into their current activities or life events. The Meta-owned app highlights that this feature, dubbed 'About', is a return to its roots. Originally, WhatsApp enabled users to share concise updates before shifting its focus exclusively to secure messaging. With this relaunch, the visibility of users' 'About' statuses is significantly increased, appearing prominently at the top of one-on-one chats and user profiles. Moreover, the new feature enables recipients to respond directly to someone's 'About' status, fostering more interactive communication. Similar to Instagram Notes, these updates will automatically vanish after 24 hours, though users can customize this duration based on their preferences. They also have the option to control the visibility of their status, choosing between sharing it with just their contacts or making it more broadly accessible. At present, the feature lacks some of the advanced functionalities found in Instagram Notes, such as support for short looping videos and music integration. However, should this feature gain traction among users, there is potential for further enhancements in the future. WhatsApp has begun rolling out this update to mobile users starting this week.
