In a significant update, Meta has unveiled an AI-powered summaries feature for WhatsApp, designed to streamline communication. Announced on Wednesday, this new capability utilizes Meta AI to condense unread messages within a chat, ensuring that users can quickly catch up on important information. The summaries are exclusively visible to the user, maintaining privacy in conversations. Meta emphasizes that this feature is built on AI technology introduced earlier this year, which does not compromise the encryption or privacy of user data. According to a company blog post, "Message Summaries employs Private Processing technology, enabling Meta AI to create summaries without Meta or WhatsApp accessing your messages or the generated summaries. This means that no one else in the chat will see the summaries of unread messages you have accessed." Initially, this feature will roll out in the United States with support for the English language, with plans for expansion to other regions and languages later this year. Previously, users had limited interactions with Meta AI within chats, primarily asking general questions or tagging messages to provide context. However, the new feature allows WhatsApp to privately gather context from chats, enhancing its AI capabilities to summarize messages and offer writing suggestions. Users can manage this new functionality through a dedicated setting found in Settings > Chats > Private Processing, where they can enable or disable specific features as they prefer.
