WhatsApp rolls out ads and paid subscriptions in status and channels to boost discovery and monetisation

WhatsApp is embarking on a notable transformation by introducing advertisements and subscription services within its Updates tab. This marks a pivotal moment in how Meta's popular messaging platform intends to generate revenue while preserving the confidentiality of personal conversations. With a user base of 1.5 billion people daily, the Updates tab encompasses both Status posts and the newly launched Channels feature. In a recent announcement, the company revealed plans to incorporate ads into these segments, along with a subscription model for Channels and enhanced visibility for promoted content. In a blog post, WhatsApp stated, "We’re introducing some new features for our Updates tab… to help admins, organisations, and businesses grow on WhatsApp." The key changes include: - **Advertisements in Status**: Companies can now showcase their products or services directly via WhatsApp Status, allowing users to discover new offerings and initiate conversations with brands seamlessly. - **Channel Subscriptions**: Users will have the option to subscribe to their preferred Channels for a monthly fee, granting access to exclusive updates. - **Promoted Channels**: WhatsApp will curate recommendations for Channels based on individual user interests, aiding creators and organizations in expanding their reach. These enhancements will be confined to the Updates tab, ensuring that personal chats remain untouched. WhatsApp emphasized that messages, calls, and group interactions will continue to benefit from end-to-end encryption, underpinning the platform's commitment to user privacy. To tailor the advertising experience, WhatsApp will utilize minimal data such as location, language preferences, and channel engagement. For users connected through Meta’s Accounts Center, ad preferences across platforms may also influence the experience. Importantly, WhatsApp reassured users that it will not sell or share their phone numbers nor use personal messages or calls for ad targeting.
