A significant move has been made by the U.S. government as it prohibits the use of WhatsApp on devices belonging to the staff of the House of Representatives. This decision arises from concerns over the app's potential security vulnerabilities, as reported by Reuters, which cited a memo distributed to House personnel. According to the memo from the Office of Cybersecurity, WhatsApp is classified as a high-risk application due to its lack of transparency regarding user data protection, the absence of encryption for stored data, and the security challenges associated with its usage. As a result, the memo advises staff to utilize alternative communication platforms such as Signal, iMessage, FaceTime, and Microsoft Teams. In a related development, Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, disclosed in January that it had uncovered and thwarted a hacking operation targeting approximately 90 WhatsApp accounts, including those of journalists. This cyberattack was reportedly connected to Paragon Solutions, an Israeli spyware company that was acquired late last year by the American private equity firm AE Industrial Partners. A research report from May indicated that several governments, including those of Australia, Canada, Cyprus, Denmark, Israel, and Singapore, could be potential clients of Paragon. Meta has yet to respond to requests for comment on this matter.
