WhatsApp tests feature allowing cross-messaging for users via Vembu's messaging app 'Arattai'

Arattai, a messaging app developed by Chennai's Zoho, is rapidly gaining popularity as an alternative to WhatsApp in India. Following a remarkable surge in downloads last month, founder Sridhar Vembu has emphasized the importance of enabling cross-platform messaging. In a surprising turn, WhatsApp is now reportedly testing a new feature that could allow its users to communicate with those on Arattai without leaving the app. This development comes as Arattai continues to establish itself in the messaging landscape, with record numbers of downloads reflecting its growing user base. Vembu has been an ardent supporter of interoperability among messaging services, drawing comparisons to the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), which allows seamless transactions across different platforms. According to updates from WaBetaInfo, WhatsApp's new feature is currently in beta testing in Europe, enabling users to send messages not just to Arattai users, but potentially to others across different platforms as well. This move could redefine how users engage with multiple messaging services, eliminating the need to switch between applications. The push towards this feature may also be influenced by regulatory pressures from the European Union's Digital Markets Act, which mandates that major tech companies like WhatsApp allow communication with competing services to prevent monopolistic behavior. Presently, the feature supports only one third-party app, BirdyChat, and requires that developers adhere to WhatsApp's encryption standards to ensure user privacy. While Arattai has yet to implement end-to-end encryption, plans to do so are underway. Although WhatsApp's cross-platform communication capabilities are limited to Europe at this stage, the implications for Arattai and the messaging ecosystem could be significant as WhatsApp navigates evolving regulations. For now, Arattai has a unique opportunity to expand its presence as WhatsApp adapts to these changes.
