WhatsApp has rolled out a new feature called ‘Safety Overview’ designed to improve safety within group chats and help users avoid falling victim to scams. This tool activates when an individual who is not in a user’s contacts adds them to an unfamiliar group. It provides essential information about the group and offers safety tips, allowing users to exit the group without engaging in the chat. Notifications from these unfamiliar groups will remain muted until the user chooses to interact with them. Additionally, the platform is experimenting with alerts that encourage users to think twice before communicating with unknown contacts, especially if that initial contact was made outside of WhatsApp. This proactive approach aims to provide users with essential context about unknown individuals, aiding in more informed decision-making. These initiatives are part of WhatsApp's broader strategy to tackle criminal operations, often linked to forced labor and organized crime in Southeast Asia. In the first half of 2025, security teams from WhatsApp and Meta identified and banned over 6.8 million accounts associated with these illicit networks before they could carry out scams. In a notable case, WhatsApp, Meta, and OpenAI collaborated to dismantle a scam center in Cambodia that was involved in various fraudulent activities, including fake payments for likes, pyramid schemes for scooter rentals, and cryptocurrency investment scams. Reports indicate that scammers utilized ChatGPT to craft initial contact messages, subsequently directing victims to Telegram for further manipulation and soliciting crypto deposits. In light of these developments, WhatsApp encourages users to be vigilant and cautious when responding to suspicious messages, particularly those from unknown numbers that promise quick financial gains. The platform advises users to enable two-step verification, block and report suspicious accounts, silence unknown callers, and ensure they are using the official app for added security.
