In a bid to enhance user safety, WhatsApp has unveiled its latest feature, "Strict Account Settings," aimed at fortifying account security. This announcement arrives shortly after notable tech figure Elon Musk critiqued WhatsApp’s privacy measures on his platform, X (formerly Twitter). The Strict Account Settings are particularly tailored for high-risk users, including public figures who may be targets for hackers or spyware. When activated, this feature enables a "Lockdown Mode" that limits access to attachments and media from unknown contacts. Users can easily enable this setting by navigating to the app’s Settings, selecting Privacy, and then Advanced options. Additionally, WhatsApp has introduced a new programming language called "Rust," which is designed to enhance the security of shared media, ensuring that photos, videos, and messages remain protected from unauthorized access. This innovative code aims to maintain the integrity of media across different devices, no matter the platform. As Meta focuses on strengthening the security features of WhatsApp, Musk continues to question its data privacy practices. He recently encouraged users to explore X’s new messaging tool, XChat, suggesting that WhatsApp lacks security. Musk's comments included claims that the app misrepresents its end-to-end encryption capabilities. XChat promotes various privacy features, such as end-to-end encryption, a four-digit PIN for chat access, and disappearing messages, positioning itself as a serious competitor to WhatsApp. This rivalry only intensifies Musk's critiques, as he aims to draw users toward X’s innovative messaging solutions.
