Airbnb-backed WeRoad raises $58M to take its group travel platform to the US

WeRoad, an innovative group travel startup based in Milan, has successfully raised $58 million in Series C funding, with Airbnb leading the investment. This new capital will support the company’s ambitious plans to expand into the U.S. market, starting with Austin. With a total funding of around $100 million, WeRoad aims to redefine travel for younger generations. The founders believe that the future of travel should prioritize social experiences over simple booking platforms. This move comes at a time when loneliness, especially among younger individuals, is gaining recognition as both a public health issue and a significant market opportunity. As the tech industry heavily invests in artificial intelligence, WeRoad is carving a niche within what it describes as the “IRL economy,” a focus on enhancing offline interactions. Similar startups are also exploring this concept through community events and experiences. The inception of WeRoad stemmed from the founders’ personal experiences. Paolo De Nadai, Fabio Bin, and Erika De Santi recognized the challenges of finding travel companions as life circumstances change. De Nadai noted, “After college, it becomes increasingly difficult to coordinate travel with friends who are settling down or have conflicting schedules.” They realized that existing group travel options often lacked meaningful connections among participants. To address this, WeRoad designs trips around shared interests, catering primarily to younger travelers. Customers can select trips based on themes like beach getaways or skiing adventures. Before embarking on their journey, participants are placed in a WhatsApp group managed by a group leader, fostering early connections among travelers. WeRoad’s itineraries typically last between 10 and 12 days, with shorter weekend options available for newcomers. The company’s innovative approach has yielded impressive results, with approximately 60% of travelers returning for additional trips. Rather than traditional tour guides, WeRoad employs group leaders who are closer in age to the travelers, enhancing relatability and camaraderie. In addition to travel, WeRoad has expanded its offerings with WeMeet, an app designed for local gatherings like dinners, hikes, and social events. In 2025, WeMeet attracted over 50,000 attendees across 35 cities and achieved 150,000 app downloads. This platform will be crucial as WeRoad rolls out its expansion plan in the U.S., beginning in Austin, where they intend to establish community connections and recruit local group leaders. The company is strategically focusing on a few cities initially, with plans to launch WeMeet events in various locations throughout 2026. De Nadai expressed enthusiasm for Austin’s vibrant community, stating, “We’re excited to bring WeMeet events to this dynamic city.” As WeRoad continues to grow, questions remain about the sustainability of businesses focused on combating loneliness and fostering social connections. However, investor confidence appears to be on the rise, with WeRoad reporting €130 million in revenue for 2025, marking a 30% increase from the previous year, and serving over 100,000 travelers in just one year.
