Weekly subscriptions dominate iOS app revenue, report finds

Recent findings from Adapty, a leading app revenue management platform, highlight a significant trend in the iOS app market: weekly subscriptions are rapidly becoming the preferred revenue model. These subscription plans now account for an impressive 46% of total app revenue, as the study analyzed $1.9 billion generated from over 11,000 applications. The report indicates that weekly subscription growth has accelerated by 9.5% this year, outpacing the 6.3% increase seen in one-time purchases during the first quarter. In contrast, other subscription types, including monthly, yearly, and lifetime options, have experienced a decline in growth. Moreover, the average price for weekly subscriptions in both the EU and the U.S. has risen, with increases of 12.2% and 12.5% respectively, bringing average prices to $8.3 and $8.1. Monthly and annual plans, however, have shown varied growth across different regions. Major app developers like Spotify and Canva have embraced weekly plans across multiple markets. The U.S. stands out as the leader in in-app purchase contributions, accounting for 48.9%, followed by Europe at 24.8%. Notably, U.S. app installs generate revenue that is three to four times higher than installs from other regions. Weekly plans have emerged as the dominant revenue source globally, with LATAM contributing 60% of revenue from these plans, while the Middle East and Africa (MEA) follows with 53%. In Europe, although weekly subscriptions are the largest revenue drivers, they hold a smaller share of 38%. However, the rise of weekly subscriptions presents challenges in user retention. "What accelerates growth also limits lifetime value," cautioned Ariel Michaeli, founder and CEO of Appfigures. He explained that weekly subscriptions work best in categories that require immediate value, such as utilities or productivity tools, but user retention tends to drop sharply after 30 days, with only a small percentage remaining active after a year. Interestingly, the report notes that certain categories, like productivity and utility apps, benefit from better lifetime value through weekly plans, while sectors such as Health & Fitness and Photo & Video see better results with annual subscriptions. Additionally, developers offering trials prior to subscription activation have reported positive outcomes, with lifetime value increasing by 64% in the U.S. and 58% in Europe. As Apple faces mounting regulatory scrutiny over its App Store practices in both the U.S. and the EU, Adapty suggests that significant changes may not be forthcoming. Vitaly Davydov, CEO of Adapty, remarked, "Discussions with major industry players indicate there hasn't been a major shift toward third-party payment systems yet. If Apple does reduce its commission to 15-20%, the justification for moving to external payment solutions becomes considerably weaker."
