In the ongoing battle against cyber threats, passkeys have emerged as the premier method for securing online accounts. Despite this, a staggering one in four major applications and services, including popular platforms like Instagram, Netflix, and Spotify, still do not offer passkeys to their users. This alarming revelation comes from a newly launched website that aims to highlight companies failing to provide passkey options for account login. Passkeys, which are generated on a user's device and linked to specific devices and websites, offer enhanced security compared to traditional passwords. They can utilize advanced biometric authentication methods like Face ID, Touch ID, or even physical security keys, and can be conveniently stored in password managers. One of the most significant advantages of passkeys is their user-friendliness; users do not need to memorize complex passwords, making them not only easier to use but also significantly harder for hackers to steal or phish—unless they gain physical access to the user's device. Scott Helme, a well-known security expert and the creator of whynopasskeys.com, expressed that the website's purpose is to encourage companies to adopt passkeys and make them available to users. He noted the effectiveness of public accountability, stating, "A list is a surprisingly effective motivator. Nobody wants to be on the list." Notably, industry giants such as Apple, Google, and Microsoft have embraced passkey technology, placing them on the favorable side of the list. While Instagram users can enable passkeys, this feature is contingent upon their accounts being linked to a Facebook account that has passkeys activated. As for Meta, which owns both Facebook and Instagram, there has been no immediate response to inquiries regarding the inconsistencies in passkey availability across its platforms. Similarly, TechCrunch has sought comments from Netflix and Spotify, promising updates should any of these companies respond.
