Waze adds new AI-powered features and customization updates

Waze, the popular navigation application owned by Google, is set to introduce exciting new features powered by artificial intelligence and enhanced customization options. These updates include a conversational reporting system for road updates and personalized navigation, designed to improve the user experience. At the heart of these enhancements is Google’s Gemini AI assistant, which signifies the tech giant's commitment to integrating Gemini across its suite of products. This move aims to strengthen Waze’s competitive edge against rivals such as Apple Maps. Users can now benefit from route suggestions that take into account their driving history as well as the prevailing traffic patterns in their area. For instance, if a user prefers highways over local streets, the app will prioritize those routes in its recommendations. If users wish to avoid personalized route suggestions, they have the option to select alternate routes or disable personalization in the app settings. The rollout of personalized navigation is currently underway for both Android and iOS users globally. Additionally, Waze has made it possible for users to engage with the Gemini AI to locate their destinations through simple conversational queries. For example, users can ask, "Find me a coffee shop that’s open right now" or "Locate the nearest gas station with the lowest prices," and Waze will provide a list of suitable options. This feature is also being introduced to the Waze beta community worldwide. Moreover, Waze is launching a new Motorcycle mode, specifically designed for two-wheelers. This mode utilizes AI to identify shortcuts and road restrictions tailored for motorcycle riders, optimizing route recommendations and improving estimated times of arrival (ETAs). It will also highlight potential hazards such as potholes, speed bumps, and narrow bridges. The Motorcycle mode is currently being rolled out in several countries, including Argentina, Brazil, and the Philippines, with plans for expansion. In addition to these capabilities, Waze continues to enhance its user-driven reporting features. Users can now report road closures and outdated addresses using natural speech, further simplifying the process. A new “less chatty” mode has also been introduced, allowing drivers to minimize voice prompts during their journeys, ensuring they stay focused on their driving experience. This feature is designed to provide essential alerts while reducing interruptions, and is also being rolled out globally on both mobile platforms.
