Waymo launches premier subscription tier for $29.99 a month, starting in select cities

Waymo has announced the introduction of a premium subscription service named Waymo Premier, designed specifically for devoted users of its robotaxi platform. This new offering, priced at $29.99 per month, will initially be available by invitation only to select riders in major cities such as San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix. Subscribers to Waymo Premier will enjoy several benefits, including prioritized ride matching, the ability to cancel up to five rides each month at no charge, and a loyalty rewards program that grants users 10% back in Waymo Cash for every trip taken. In a blog post, Waymo emphasized its commitment to enhancing the user experience, stating, "You spoke, and we listened to how we can offer an even more elevated experience for you, our top riders." As Waymo gears up for significant expansion, including plans to enter the London market later this year, the company is focused on leveraging its most active users in regions with high demand. The subscription model not only diversifies revenue streams but also plays a crucial role in Waymo's financial strategy as it navigates competitive pressures from emerging rivals like Amazon's Zoox and Tesla. In the first quarter of the year, Alphabet's Other Bets division, which encompasses Waymo, reported an increase in losses, rising to $2.1 billion compared to $1.22 billion the previous year. Revenue within this segment also fell to $411 million from $450 million. Earlier this year, Waymo successfully raised $16 billion in funding, bringing its valuation to an impressive $126 billion—more than double its worth in October 2024. This funding round included investments from Alphabet as well as prominent firms such as Andreessen Horowitz, Fidelity, and T. Rowe Price.
