Waymo’s fleet of autonomous robotaxis may soon play a crucial role in energy management as their used batteries are set to be repurposed for stationary energy storage. This innovative shift is the result of a strategic collaboration between Waymo and B2U Storage Solutions, revealed on June 4. B2U has been at the forefront of repurposing electric vehicle batteries, integrating them into large-scale energy storage systems. These facilities are designed to store excess renewable energy generated during low-demand periods and release it during peak consumption times, thus enhancing grid reliability. Freeman Hall, CEO of B2U Storage Solutions, emphasized the importance of maximizing the residual value of electric vehicle batteries once they are no longer fit for use in cars. He expressed enthusiasm about partnering with Waymo, noting the extensive mileage their vehicles accumulate, which accelerates the need for battery replacements. Under this agreement, B2U will be able to utilize batteries from Waymo’s fleet that reach the end of their automotive life, as well as those being exchanged during routine maintenance. Adam Lenz, Waymo’s head of sustainability and environment, highlighted the company's proactive approach to battery maintenance, which includes seeking second-life applications for these batteries that still have significant capacity remaining. While Waymo has not disclosed specific figures regarding the mileage at which they typically replace batteries, it is known that their robotaxis operate substantially more than regular electric vehicles. This high usage rate suggests that battery degradation may occur more rapidly, providing B2U with a steady supply of used batteries for energy storage projects, some of which have been in service for several years. This strategic partnership not only supports renewable energy initiatives but also exemplifies the potential for sustainable practices in the electric vehicle industry.
