Waymo robotaxis are now giving rides on freeways in LA, San Francisco, and Phoenix

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company that evolved from Google's self-driving project, is making headlines once again. After 16 years of testing and development, the company has announced that its robotaxis will now operate on freeways in San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. This significant expansion aims to enhance ride efficiency, with the promise of cutting travel times by up to 50%. Initially, freeways remained a challenging frontier for Waymo, despite being part of early testing. The introduction of freeway rides is expected to attract new users, especially those commuting between various suburbs and towns within the expansive San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in the metro areas of Los Angeles and Phoenix. Additionally, this development is crucial for providing seamless transportation to and from the San Francisco Airport, a route currently undergoing testing. To utilize the new freeway service, riders will need to express their interest through the Waymo app. Upon requesting a ride, they may be matched with a vehicle that can take them on a freeway route. This expansion also includes new routes extending to San Jose, forming a comprehensive 260-mile service area across the Peninsula, with plans for curbside service at San Jose Mineta International Airport already in the works. Waymo’s co-CEO, Dmitri Dolgov, emphasized that while freeway driving may seem straightforward, mastering it for fully autonomous vehicles without human backup poses unique challenges. The company has been diligently working on safety and reliability to ensure a successful rollout. Although Waymo robotaxis have been seen on freeways for some time, the company has prioritized extensive testing, including simulations, to prepare for real-world scenarios. Principal software engineer Pierre Kreitman highlighted that freeway driving, while perceived as easier, presents distinct challenges, particularly due to the rarity of critical events that allow for testing the self-driving system in high-stakes situations. To address this, Waymo has supplemented its public road driving with closed course and simulation tests, ensuring that vehicles can transition safely between freeways and surface streets while adapting to their surroundings. With the introduction of freeway operations, Waymo has also updated its protocols to ensure effective coordination with safety officials, such as the California Highway Patrol, marking a new chapter in the company's journey toward fully autonomous transportation.
