Waymo has temporarily halted its robotaxi services in Atlanta and San Antonio due to difficulties in navigating severe weather conditions, particularly heavy rain and flooding. Reports emerged of a Waymo vehicle getting trapped in a flooded street in Atlanta, where it remained stuck for about an hour before being rescued. In a statement, the company emphasized its commitment to safety for both passengers and other road users. They acknowledged that the unoccupied robotaxi encountered a flooded area during intense rainfall, illustrating the challenges posed by unforeseen weather conditions. Waymo admitted that it had not yet finalized a solution to prevent its vehicles from entering flooded zones when it issued a software recall last week. To mitigate risks, Waymo implemented an update designed to restrict operations in locations identified as having a high risk of flooding. However, these measures were insufficient to prevent the incident in Atlanta, where flooding occurred before the National Weather Service issued any warnings. This incident adds to a series of challenges Waymo has faced with its autonomous vehicles. Last year, complaints arose regarding robotaxis illegally navigating around stopped school buses, leading to a software fix that failed to resolve the issue. This situation has drawn the attention of both the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), who are currently investigating the matter. Further complicating matters, another investigation is underway following a January incident in Santa Monica, California, where a Waymo robotaxi struck a child, resulting in minor injuries. As Waymo navigates these hurdles, they continue to adjust their technology to enhance safety protocols for their fleet.
