Waymo expands pause to four cities as robotaxis keep driving into floods

Waymo has made the decision to suspend its robotaxi services in four cities due to difficulties encountered during heavy rain and flooding conditions. This action follows a previous recall issued last week, aimed at addressing these ongoing issues. Reports indicate that one of Waymo’s vehicles was seen navigating through a flooded area in Atlanta, Georgia, where it became stuck for approximately an hour before being retrieved. In light of the situation, Waymo has halted its operations in Atlanta, as well as in San Antonio, Texas, while it seeks a viable solution. The company emphasizes that safety remains paramount, stating, "Safety is Waymo’s top priority, both for our riders and everyone we share the road with." They noted that during a recent downpour in Atlanta, an unoccupied robotaxi encountered a flooded road and came to a stop. Additionally, Waymo has also paused services in Dallas and Houston due to severe weather conditions affecting Texas. The company acknowledged that it had not yet finalized a solution to prevent its vehicles from entering flooded areas when it issued its software recall last week. Instead, an update was distributed to the fleet, implementing restrictions in locations deemed at high risk of flooding, as per documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Despite these precautions, the robotaxi still ventured into a flooded intersection in Atlanta. Waymo explained that the rainfall's intensity in Atlanta created flooding conditions that emerged before the National Weather Service issued any relevant warnings. The NHTSA has confirmed awareness of the incident and is in communication with Waymo, stating they will take necessary actions if warranted. This is not the first instance of Waymo facing challenges with its robotaxis. Last year, issues arose when the vehicles were observed illegally passing stopped school buses, prompting the company to implement a fix, which unfortunately did not fully resolve the problem. The behavior of Waymo's vehicles around school buses is currently under investigation by both the NHTSA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Waymo has submitted a series of documents to the NHTSA, all of which have been redacted. A follow-up request for further data has already been made by the NHTSA. Another ongoing investigation involves a January incident in Santa Monica, California, where a Waymo robotaxi collided with a child, resulting in minor injuries. This situation has prompted increased scrutiny of Waymo's safety protocols and operational decisions.
