Waymo to begin testing at San Jose airport this fall

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet, has announced plans to commence testing its robotaxi service at San José Mineta International Airport, marking the company's first foray into airport operations in California. The trials are scheduled to begin this fall, enabling driverless rides for passengers traveling through the airport. In a statement, Waymo indicated that it intends to offer paid rides at the airport later this year. San José Mayor Matt Mahan expressed enthusiasm for the initiative, highlighting that with the city positioned to host major sporting events in 2026, Waymo's service would facilitate smooth and safe transportation for visitors. Passengers will be able to catch rides from the Ground Transportation Centers located in either Terminal A or B, connecting them to various destinations within Waymo's established service area throughout the San Francisco Bay region. This initiative will add to Waymo's growing network, as it becomes the second international airport to provide the company's service, following the successful launch at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport earlier in 2023, which has since become the most frequented destination in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Waymo continues to expand its driverless ride-hailing services across the United States, having already initiated operations in major cities such as Austin, Atlanta, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles. Recently, the company broadened its coverage in the San Francisco Bay Area, adding an additional 27 square miles that include areas like Mountain View, Palo Alto, and San Jose, enhancing its presence in this bustling region.
