Waymo cleared to offer robotaxi rides at San Jose airport

Waymo has secured the green light to deploy its innovative robotaxi services at San Jose Mineta International Airport, marking its first airport venture in California. The company disclosed on Thursday that it will begin testing its autonomous vehicles at the airport in the upcoming months, with plans to roll out commercial rides by year-end. This milestone comes after years of efforts by Waymo to establish operations at California airports. In 2023, the company faced setbacks when negotiations with officials at San Francisco International Airport did not yield favorable results. However, earlier this year, Waymo received a permit to conduct manual mapping of the San Jose airport as a preliminary step towards launching its commercial services. Waymo's expansion efforts have been noteworthy; it initiated curbside drop-off and pick-up services at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport in late 2023 and enhanced its services to 24/7 availability by August 2024. Since then, the company has reportedly facilitated “hundreds of thousands” of trips to and from the Phoenix airport, making it the most frequented location in the area. Currently, Waymo operates a fleet of over 2,000 robotaxis nationwide, with approximately 800 stationed in the Bay Area, 500 in Los Angeles, 400 in Phoenix, 100 in Austin, and several in Atlanta. Just this week, the company announced plans to extend its services to Denver and Seattle, while previously indicating intentions to launch commercial operations in Dallas, Miami, and Washington, D.C. Additionally, Waymo has recently gained approval to test its vehicles in the bustling environment of New York City.
