Waymo can keep testing robotaxis in NYC until end of 2025

New York City regulators have granted an extension to Waymo’s autonomous vehicle testing permit, allowing the company to continue its efforts until the end of 2025. This announcement came on Wednesday, marking a significant step for Waymo as it aims to establish its robotaxi services in one of the world’s busiest urban environments. Initially approved in August, the permit now allows Waymo to operate up to eight of its Jaguar I-Pace vehicles within Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn. Importantly, a human safety operator will be present in each vehicle, although the permit exempts Waymo's drivers from the requirement to keep one hand on the wheel at all times, a regulation typically mandated by New York law. This extension is seen as a crucial move for Waymo, positioning the company as a frontrunner in launching a robotaxi service amidst the bustling streets of New York City. Currently, Waymo runs a commercial service in cities such as San Francisco, Austin, Atlanta, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, with plans to expand to Miami, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Denver, and Nashville within the next year. Assemblymember Brian Cunningham, who sponsored legislation on autonomous vehicles, expressed optimism about New York City’s progress. He stated that the testing will help demonstrate how this technology can enhance safety, alleviate congestion, and improve mobility options for residents. Cunningham emphasized the importance of innovation that aligns with the needs of New Yorkers. However, Waymo still faces significant challenges in NYC. Despite the permit extension, the company is not yet permitted to transport passengers or operate a commercial robotaxi service without additional licenses from the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission. A representative from Waymo did not provide details on whether discussions about these licenses are underway. Furthermore, New York lacks a permitting framework that would allow autonomous vehicle companies to test or deploy robotaxis without a human driver present. Although there have been proposals aimed at creating such a framework, no legislation has been passed to date.
