Baby delivered in Waymo continues proud tradition of not making it to the hospital

In a remarkable turn of events, a woman gave birth inside a Waymo robotaxi in San Francisco on Monday night while on her way to UCSF Medical Center. This incident adds a unique chapter to the ongoing narrative of driverless vehicles, surprising many who are accustomed to the unpredictable nature of ride-sharing experiences. According to reports from The SF Standard, Waymo’s remote monitoring team identified unusual activity during the ride and promptly contacted emergency services. However, the autonomous vehicle managed to reach the hospital before help arrived. This incident highlights a peculiar tradition that remains unchanged despite technological advancements: expectant mothers have long been delivering babies in the back seats of taxis and ride-sharing vehicles across the globe. There have been notable examples in the past, such as a mother in India who gave birth en route to the hospital and named her son Uber, thanks to the assistance of the driver. Similarly, a couple in California welcomed their child in an Uber during Shabbat back in 2017, amusingly contemplating naming their baby after the ride-hailing service. Now, with automation taking center stage, Waymo has transformed this age-old scenario into a new reality, albeit partially. The vehicle involved in the San Francisco birth was taken off the road for cleaning post-incident. Furthermore, Waymo acknowledged that this wasn’t the first time a birth occurred in one of its vehicles; a baby in Phoenix had that honor previously. A Waymo representative humorously remarked, "While this is a very rare occurrence, some of our newest riders just can’t wait to experience their first Waymo ride." This incident not only showcases the evolving relationship between technology and everyday life but also marks a significant moment in the history of automated transportation.
