Waymo opens robotaxi service in Nashville, partners with Lyft

Waymo has officially launched its robotaxi service in Nashville after months of preparation that included manual driving and rigorous testing of its self-driving technology with a safety operator on board. This marks Nashville as the 11th city where residents can now request rides in Waymo's autonomous vehicles. The company has opted for a gradual rollout, with spokesperson Chris Pappas stating that riders will be invited to use the service on a rolling basis. This strategy aims to ensure a consistent and high-quality experience as they expand their operations. Initially, the robotaxi service will cover a 60-square-mile area within Nashville. While specific numbers concerning the fleet size were not disclosed, Pappas mentioned that Waymo has “dozens of vehicles” ready to serve the city. In a significant partnership shift, Waymo has teamed up with Lyft for this launch, diverging from its previous collaborations with Uber in other cities like Austin and Atlanta. In Nashville, users will be able to request rides through the Waymo app, with plans to integrate the service into the Lyft app as the operation grows. Lyft will take charge of various fleet services, including vehicle maintenance, charging, and depot management through its subsidiary Flexdrive, distinguishing this approach from their previous partnerships. Waymo has adopted a mixed operational strategy, collaborating with various companies to manage its fleet and ride-hailing services in several locations. For example, in Dallas, Avis oversees the depot operations for Waymo's vehicles, while in Phoenix, the fintech startup Moove manages the autonomous fleet. This series of partnerships underscores Waymo’s ambition to position itself primarily as a technology provider rather than an operator, especially for the long term. With a significant influx of $16 billion in funding, Waymo is set to accelerate its expansion, already offering robotaxi services in multiple cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, Phoenix, San Antonio, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
