Waymo opens Ojai robotaxis to select riders as company aims to lower cost of fleet expansion

Waymo has commenced the rollout of its innovative Ojai robotaxis, offering selected customers rides in this latest model, which is specially engineered to perform effectively in snowy conditions and is more cost-efficient to produce compared to its previous vehicle models. Available initially to the public in major cities like San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix, Waymo plans to expand its service to San Diego, Las Vegas, and Denver by summer. As of now, there are 100 Ojai vehicles already on the streets, contributing to an extensive fleet of nearly 4,000 autonomous cars. According to Ryan Powell, Waymo's head of design, the company anticipates having thousands of Ojai vehicles operational by year-end. The Ojai, unveiled in 2024, represents a significant advancement for Waymo, as it is the first vehicle to utilize the sixth-generation Waymo Driver. This proprietary system boasts improved capabilities, particularly in low-light scenarios. The Ojai vehicles, manufactured by China’s Geely, require fewer expensive sensors and cameras than the earlier Jaguar models, allowing for substantial cost reductions in production. Waymo, which recently secured a $16 billion investment from parent company Alphabet along with other supporters, aims to solidify its dominance in the autonomous vehicle market against competitors like Tesla and Amazon’s Zoox. The company has provided over 20 million autonomous rides and is targeting an ambitious goal of achieving 1 million weekly trips by the end of the year. The new Ojai models feature custom chips and advanced lidar technology able to penetrate heavy rain and snow. They also come equipped with enhanced audio systems that improve the detection of sirens and other important sounds. Notably, these vehicles offer more space and include removable steering wheels, with doors that operate automatically. Powell highlighted that the design team's insights have influenced the Ojai’s familiar layout, which resembles the previous I-PACE model, helping users acclimate to the technology. When questioned about the potential integration of Google's Gemini AI technology, Powell indicated that the company is investigating more intuitive interaction methods with the vehicle, enhancing the user experience. However, amidst this rapid expansion, Waymo is navigating safety challenges as well. Recently, the company initiated a voluntary recall of approximately 3,800 robotaxis to address software glitches that could lead to unsafe driving in flooded areas. Additionally, Waymo has temporarily suspended freeway operations due to performance issues observed in construction zones.
