Waymo launches a loyalty program with 10% cash back and free cancellations

Waymo is set to unveil its new loyalty initiative, Waymo Premier, aimed at enhancing the experience for regular robotaxi users. For a monthly fee of $29.99, members will enjoy a variety of exclusive benefits designed to make their rides more convenient and rewarding. Among the standout features of the Waymo Premier program are the ability to bypass the virtual queue and earn 10% cash back on each ride, with the potential for even greater rewards during peak times. Additionally, members will receive five complimentary ride cancellations each month, and they will also have the opportunity to book a robotaxi in cities that currently have a waitlist for the service. However, the Waymo Premier program will not be accessible to riders in Austin or Atlanta, where the service operates exclusively through the Uber app. This launch coincides with Waymo's aggressive expansion strategy across the United States, as the company also prepares for an international rollout later this year. In parallel, Waymo is commencing the deployment of its latest vehicle, the Zeekr-manufactured van dubbed 'Ojai,' in key cities like Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The introduction of this loyalty program may signal the beginning of a new revenue stream for Waymo, similar to the success seen by its major partner, Uber, with its own membership program, Uber One. Uber reported in May that over 50 million subscribers currently pay $9.99 a month (or $96 annually) for their program, which offers various perks such as discounts on Uber Eats orders and waived delivery fees. The concept of loyalty programs has proven particularly lucrative for airlines, with major U.S. carriers relying heavily on membership revenue to maintain profitability. Waymo indicated that the pricing and features of the Premier program were developed based on direct input from riders regarding their preferences for membership benefits. Although the fee is significantly higher than Uber One, data suggests that riders are increasingly inclined to invest more in Waymo's robotaxi services compared to traditional ride-hailing options.
