Waymo's bumpy month

Waymo has encountered a turbulent month as it has temporarily halted rider services across six cities and suspended highway rides in all areas where they operate. The troubles began in early May when the company initiated a software recall for its autonomous fleet after a robotaxi navigated through a flooded road in San Antonio, as detailed in a report to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). According to the NHTSA report, the Waymo autonomous vehicle (AV) may slow down but not completely stop when it detects an untraversable flooded lane on higher-speed roadways. This incident followed just a few months after Waymo launched its services in San Antonio in February. A spokesperson for the company informed Business Insider that the public rider service was paused to enhance its autonomous driving technology, with a solution reportedly in development. The challenges with flooded roads have continued, leading to further service suspensions. Just recently, Waymo paused rider services in Atlanta due to heavy rain and flash flooding, with reports indicating that an unoccupied vehicle had encountered a flooded area before being retrieved. The company confirmed that by Friday, services had been suspended in six cities: Atlanta, Nashville, Austin, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio, all affected by severe weather conditions. In addition to weather-related interruptions, Waymo also paused highway rides to boost performance in construction zones. The company stated that it was temporarily ceasing freeway operations as it integrates recent technical insights into its software, with plans to resume these routes soon. This series of operational constraints comes on the heels of Waymo's recent expansion into six new cities, including Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Orlando, and Nashville, marking a notable acceleration compared to previous years. In 2024, Waymo added Los Angeles to its network and deepened its presence in the San Francisco Bay Area, followed by Austin and Atlanta the following year. However, growth in California—its largest market—has decelerated as the company redirects resources toward its expansion plans. An analysis by The Driverless Digest highlighted a significant drop in monthly ride gains, from over 14,800 weekly rides in January to just 2,700 in March. Harry Campbell, founder of The Driverless Digest, expressed surprise at the number of issues Waymo is facing, particularly regarding flooding and construction zones at this stage of their operations. He noted, however, that pausing services might be a prudent decision if performance does not meet expectations. Looking ahead, Waymo plans to commence commercial rides in Las Vegas, San Diego, and London later this year, alongside the introduction of two new vehicle platforms: the Ojai and the Hyundai Ioniq 5, both featuring a streamlined sensor suite.
