Waymo opens robotaxi service to 'select riders' in 4 more U.S. cities

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle division of Alphabet, has announced the launch of its robotaxi service for select users in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando. This latest expansion brings Waymo's footprint to a total of ten U.S. cities, solidifying its position as a leader in the North American driverless ride-hailing sector. As the company aims to foster loyalty among its riders and address the concerns of skeptics, it faces a significant challenge: a survey by the American Automobile Association indicated that 60% of U.S. drivers express apprehension about driverless technology. The recent expansion comes at a time when competitors, including Tesla, Zoox (owned by Amazon), and various startups like Waabi and Nuro, are also racing to establish their own robotaxi services. In Asia, companies like Baidu's Apollo Go and WeRide are capturing significant market shares in the autonomous vehicle space. Waymo's strategy involves inviting a subset of app users in the newly added cities to experience their first rides, with plans to gradually open the service to more passengers by the end of 2026. Waymo emphasized its commitment to Texas and Florida, having previously launched services in Miami and Austin in collaboration with Uber. The company operates in several major markets, including Atlanta, Phoenix, Los Angeles, and the San Francisco Bay Area. For its latest expansion, Waymo will deploy its fifth-generation driving technology in Jaguar I-PACE sedans. Earlier this month, Waymo began offering rides using its sixth-generation driving system in California, utilizing Geely's Ojai electric vehicles. The company has also successfully raised $16 billion in funding, which has boosted its valuation to $126 billion, with Alphabet as its primary investor. Currently, Waymo operates over 3,000 autonomous vehicles, as reported to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). However, the firm is under scrutiny due to investigations into the performance of its vehicles around schools and during adverse weather conditions, such as a power outage that caused significant traffic disruptions in San Francisco. In a recent correspondence with Senator Edward Markey, Waymo stated that it is currently facilitating over 400,000 paid trips weekly across the nation and has surpassed 20 million total trips since its inception. Markey has urged Waymo and other autonomous vehicle developers to enhance transparency regarding the reliance on human operators, known as 'remote assistants,' who provide guidance in complex driving scenarios.
