Waymo to begin testing in Chicago and Charlotte

Waymo is set to expand its autonomous vehicle operations with the introduction of robotaxis in Chicago and Charlotte, as announced by the company on Wednesday. The initiative marks an essential step in the company’s strategy to broaden the reach of its self-driving technology. As part of this expansion, Waymo will initiate manual mapping and data collection in these cities starting today. This foundational work is crucial for understanding the unique road conditions, traffic dynamics, and potential challenges that each city presents. Waymo typically undertakes extensive manual driving and mapping in a new area for several months before gradually transitioning to autonomous testing and ultimately, fully driverless services. Charlotte presents a relatively straightforward scenario for Waymo, characterized by its suburban layout and generally mild weather. On the other hand, Chicago poses greater challenges with its harsh winter conditions, heavy traffic, and complex urban environment. Successfully navigating these hurdles in Chicago would significantly bolster Waymo’s argument for the nationwide scalability of its technology. This expansion comes on the heels of a recent setback for the company when New York abandoned plans for commercial robotaxi trials. However, Waymo's growth continues as it also started offering commercial driverless services in Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, and Orlando this week, raising its operational footprint to a total of ten cities. In addition to Chicago and Charlotte, Waymo plans to test and initiate operations in various locations, including Denver, London, and Washington, D.C. Recently, the Alphabet-owned company secured a massive $16 billion in funding aimed at accelerating its international expansion efforts.
