Waymo starts robotaxi testing in Philadelphia and NYC

Waymo has embarked on significant testing initiatives in Philadelphia and New York City, marking a strategic move into the Northeastern market. This initiative, branded as 'road trips,' is more about exploration than immediate commercial rollout. Earlier this year, the Alphabet-owned company has executed similar trips in various cities including Houston, Orlando, and Las Vegas. During these trips, Waymo deploys a fleet of human-operated vehicles fitted with its autonomous driving technology to methodically map new urban environments. Following this mapping phase, the vehicles undergo autonomous testing, albeit with a human driver present, to gather crucial data for optimizing their AI systems. In some instances, these exploratory trips have paved the way for commercial services. For example, a recent trip to Santa Monica has resulted in a successful operational service in Los Angeles, encompassing popular areas like Beverly Hills and Hollywood. In Philadelphia, Waymo aims to test its vehicles in the city’s most challenging areas, including downtown and major highways. Residents can expect to see Waymo cars navigating various neighborhoods, from North Central to Eastwick, and even along the Delaware River. Meanwhile, in New York City, Waymo's plans include manually driving its vehicles across key locations such as Manhattan from Central Park to The Battery, while also mapping regions in Jersey City and Hoboken. The company sought a permit last month to begin testing autonomous vehicles in NYC but is still awaiting approval. Waymo has previously conducted mapping operations in the city since late 2021 and even tested self-driving in winter conditions in Buffalo earlier this year. However, the path to fully autonomous operations in New York remains complex, as current regulations require a human driver in the front seat. Waymo is actively advocating for changes to these laws. The company continues to build on its testing across the nation, with established commercial robotaxi services in cities like Atlanta, Austin, and Los Angeles, while looking to expand into Miami this year and Washington D.C. by 2026.
