Waymo starts driverless rides in four more U.S. markets as expansion accelerates

Waymo is set to enhance its presence in the autonomous vehicle market by launching driverless rides in four additional cities across the United States. This expansion includes San Diego, Las Vegas, Tampa, and Denver, marking a significant step in Waymo's strategy to maintain its lead over competitors such as Tesla and Amazon's Zoox. Initially, the driverless services will be available to Alphabet employees, but plans are in place to open the rollout to the general public shortly thereafter. Waymo's expansion comes after the company first disclosed its ambitions last year, and it currently operates its autonomous vehicles in over ten cities nationwide. While Waymo enjoys a substantial advantage in the market, rivals Tesla and Zoox are gradually entering new locations. Zoox is preparing to introduce its robotaxi services to select public users in Austin and Miami by the end of the year, while Tesla is expanding its services beyond Austin into other areas of Texas and Miami as well. As of May, Waymo's fleet consists of approximately 4,000 robotaxis, all equipped with the latest fifth and sixth-generation automated driving technologies, according to filings with U.S. auto safety regulators. However, the company faces challenges as more of its vehicles become operational. Incidents have been reported where some of Waymo's cars drove into flooded areas during extreme weather and faced traffic issues during the Fourth of July, leading to battery drain and unusual behavior. In a significant funding move earlier this year, Waymo secured $16 billion from Alphabet and other investors. Looking ahead, the company is preparing to launch operations in London, its first international market, within the year, having already completed over 20 million autonomous rides. Waymo aims to reach the milestone of one million weekly trips by the end of the year.
