Waymo has officially begun offering rides to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), marking a significant expansion in its autonomous ride-sharing services. In a recent announcement, the Alphabet-owned company stated that it will initially provide this service to a select group of customers, with plans to gradually open it up to all riders in the months ahead. Initially, pickups and drop-offs will take place at the airport's rental car center, but Waymo intends to expand to other terminals in the future. This move follows Waymo's successful pilot program that started last year, allowing passengers to travel on freeways, which was a crucial step toward offering airport services. Waymo's co-CEO, Tekedra Mawakana, expressed enthusiasm about this new venture, stating, "Providing rides to and from San Francisco International Airport fulfills one of our riders' most requested features and strengthens our ties with the city." With many travelers coming to the area for significant events this year, Waymo aims to meet the increasing demand for dependable, fully autonomous rides. The addition of SFO as a destination marks Waymo’s third major airport service, further establishing its presence in the transportation sector traditionally dominated by rideshare giants like Uber and Lyft. The company already operates at San Jose Mineta International Airport and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, showcasing its commitment to expanding autonomous travel options.
