Waymo is making significant strides in its expansion efforts, recently announcing its official authorization to operate fully self-driving vehicles across a broader swath of California. The robotaxi service, which is already active in major cities like San Francisco and Los Angeles, now has the green light to deploy its autonomous fleet in a more extensive region, as indicated by maps released by California's Department of Motor Vehicles. In the Bay Area, Waymo's newly approved operational zones encompass a large part of the East Bay and North Bay, including the popular Napa Valley region, along with Sacramento. Meanwhile, in Southern California, the company can now extend its services from Santa Clarita, situated north of Los Angeles, all the way to San Diego. However, before Waymo can commence carrying passengers in these newly approved areas, it must secure additional regulatory clearance, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle. While specific timelines for the launch of rides in these locations remain unclear, Waymo has hinted at plans to welcome riders in San Diego by mid-2026. Previously, the company had expressed ambitions to roll out services in multiple cities next year, including Dallas, Denver, and Miami, among others. Waymo's recent announcements have been plentiful, with news of its upcoming entries into Minneapolis, New Orleans, and Tampa, as well as the removal of safety drivers in Miami ahead of its commercial launch. The company is also preparing to offer rides on freeways in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Phoenix. This rapid expansion raises intriguing possibilities about how riders might utilize these robotaxis, as discussed in a recent episode of the Equity podcast, where experts speculated on the potential for unusual or risky behaviors as access to the service broadens.
