Waymo will update driverless fleet after San Francisco blackout to improve navigation during outages

In the wake of a recent power outage that temporarily halted its driverless car services in San Francisco, Waymo has announced plans to upgrade its fleet. The Alphabet-owned company aims to better equip its vehicles for future emergencies, emphasizing its commitment to adapting to challenges presented by infrastructure failures. The blackout, which struck the city on Saturday afternoon, affected approximately 130,000 customers at its peak, according to Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). By Sunday morning, around 21,000 residents were still without power due to significant damage caused by a fire at a substation. This disruption led to traffic lights and signals malfunctioning across the city, resulting in severe congestion. Social media footage showed several Waymo cars caught in gridlock, prompting the company to instruct its fleet to safely pull over and return to depots in an orderly manner, minimizing further disruption during the recovery efforts. In a blog post released on Tuesday, Waymo shared that it is conducting a thorough analysis of the incident and is implementing three immediate strategies. The first step involves comprehensive updates across the fleet to enhance vehicles' awareness of regional outages, enabling them to navigate intersections more effectively. Additionally, Waymo is refining its emergency response protocols and collaborating with San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie’s office to enhance emergency preparedness initiatives. Furthermore, the company is revising its training for first responders as it gathers insights from this event and similar occurrences. Waymo currently operates paid rides in various locations, including Austin, Phoenix, Atlanta, Los Angeles, and the Bay Area. The company has seen rapid growth, recently reporting over 450,000 weekly paid rides and a total of 14 million trips completed since its launch in 2020, with expectations to surpass 20 million by year-end. Waymo remains committed to transforming urban mobility and maintaining a strong safety record amid evolving challenges on the roads.
