Waymo has announced an exciting collaboration with Lyft to introduce a robotaxi service in Nashville by 2026. The innovative venture was revealed on Wednesday, with plans for Waymo to commence testing its fleet of all-electric, autonomous Jaguar I-Pace vehicles in the Nashville area soon. Public access to the service is expected to begin next year. This partnership marks a significant step as Waymo expands its robotaxi services beyond its original market in Phoenix to new cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. The Alphabet subsidiary has also set its sights on Miami, Washington D.C., Dallas, and Denver for future operations. The agreement reflects Waymo's shift from being solely an operator to becoming a technology provider for autonomous vehicles. Earlier this year, Waymo launched a robotaxi service in collaboration with Uber in both Atlanta and Austin. In that arrangement, Waymo handled vehicle testing and roadside assistance, while Uber took care of fleet services like cleaning and maintenance through its subsidiary, Moove Cars. In Nashville, the structure of the Waymo-Lyft partnership mirrors that arrangement, with Lyft managing fleet services through its subsidiary Flexdrive. Lyft has committed to investing in a dedicated facility to support this autonomous vehicle fleet. A unique aspect of the Nashville service is the dual access for customers. Initially, users will be able to hail rides through the Waymo app, but as the service grows, autonomous vehicles will also be available for matching rides through the Lyft app. This differs from the Uber partnership in Atlanta and Austin, where users are restricted to only the Uber app to connect with robotaxis. This isn't the first time Waymo and Lyft have collaborated; they previously worked together in 2019 to integrate a limited number of self-driving vehicles into Lyft’s ride-hailing network in Phoenix as part of Waymo's effort to expand its commercial robotaxi services.
