Waymo has taken a significant step in its journey toward launching a driverless taxi service in Nashville by removing the human safety driver from its autonomous vehicles. This move marks a pivotal moment for the Alphabet-owned company, which has been conducting trials in the city for several months. Set to debut its robotaxi service this year in collaboration with Lyft, Waymo plans to allow riders to book rides through its dedicated app initially. As the service expands, users will also be able to access Waymo’s self-driving cars via the Lyft app. Lyft will manage various operational aspects, including vehicle maintenance, charging infrastructure, and depot management, through its subsidiary, Flexdrive. Waymo has been rapidly expanding its robotaxi services and currently operates commercially in several major cities, including Atlanta, Austin, Los Angeles, Miami, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Phoenix. Typically, Waymo's market entry strategy involves deploying a limited fleet of manually driven vehicles to map the area. Following that, autonomous vehicles undergo testing with a human operator present. Eventually, the company initiates driverless trials, allowing employees to use the service before officially launching the robotaxi operation.
