Elon Musk's AI venture, xAI, is experiencing a significant shake-up as founding member Toby Pohlen announces his departure, marking yet another high-profile exit amidst ongoing personnel changes within the company. In a heartfelt message shared on X, Pohlen reflected on his three years with the team, expressing gratitude and highlighting the camaraderie built during his tenure. "Three years, thousands of PRs, and a million jokes. Today was my last day at xAI," he wrote. Pohlen praised his colleagues, stating, "You rock, no one burns the midnight oil better," and extended thanks to Musk for the opportunity, noting the invaluable lessons learned about execution and product perfection. While he did not reveal his next career move, he indicated a desire for a break to recharge and reflect on his future endeavors. Pohlen's exit adds to an alarming trend at xAI, where several key figures have recently departed. Notably, co-founder Jimmy Ba, who was instrumental in research and safety initiatives, announced his exit while maintaining his friendship with the team. His departure followed that of fellow co-founder Tony Wu, who led the reasoning division, and several other researchers, including Hang Gao. With these departures, nearly half of the original founding team has now left xAI. The departures also include infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic, who transitioned to OpenAI earlier this year, and former Google engineer Christian Szegedy, who exited in February 2022. Greg Yang, another notable figure from Microsoft, stepped down last month for health-related reasons. As xAI navigates these challenges, it continues to strive for competitive positioning against industry giants like OpenAI, Google, and Anthropic, all while enhancing its products, including the Grok chatbot and related systems.
