Warner Music settles copyright lawsuit with Udio, signs deal for AI music platform

Warner Music Group (WMG) has made headlines by resolving a copyright infringement dispute with the emerging AI music platform Udio. The agreement, announced on Wednesday, includes a licensing arrangement for a groundbreaking AI music creation service scheduled to debut in 2026. According to WMG, the innovative platform will leverage generative AI models trained on licensed music, creating what they describe as a "next-generation music creation, listening, and discovery platform." This initiative aims to generate new revenue streams for artists and songwriters while safeguarding their original works. The forthcoming subscription service will empower users to craft remixes, covers, and entirely new songs utilizing the voices of participating artists and the compositions of involved songwriters. Warner Music Group has assured that this platform will prioritize proper credit and compensation for creators. WMG CEO Robert Kyncl expressed, "We’re unwaveringly committed to the protection of the rights of our artists and songwriters. Udio has taken significant steps to ensure that the music on its service will be authorized and licensed." Kyncl emphasized that this collaboration is part of WMG's larger goal to responsibly harness the potential of AI, creating new creative and commercial opportunities while enhancing fan experiences. Notable artists under WMG’s umbrella include Lady Gaga, Coldplay, and The Weeknd. Udio co-founder and CEO Andrew Sanchez stated, "This partnership is a crucial step towards realizing a future in which technology amplifies creativity and unlocks new opportunities for artists and songwriters." He highlighted that the platform will allow fans to engage in music creation alongside their favorite artists, fostering a unique environment that offers both control and connection for creators. This settlement signifies a pivotal change in the music industry’s stance toward AI technologies. Last year, WMG, Universal Music Group, and Sony Music Entertainment filed lawsuits against Udio and another AI music competitor, Suno, over copyright violations. Both platforms enable users to generate music using AI-driven text prompts. Reports suggest that Universal Music Group and Sony Music Entertainment are also exploring licensing agreements with Udio and Suno. In a demonstration of investor confidence in AI music technology, Suno recently announced it has secured $250 million in Series C funding, achieving a post-money valuation of $2.45 billion, with contributions from prominent investors like Menlo Ventures and Nvidia’s venture arm NVentures.
