Walmart's head of AI reveals the key difference between its shopping deals with Google Gemini and ChatGPT

The competition in AI-driven shopping is intensifying, and Walmart is strategically positioning itself for success. The concept of utilizing chatbots for purchasing items has transitioned from theory to practice, particularly with the introduction of shopping functionalities through ChatGPT in November. Recently, Google’s AI platform Gemini unveiled its own shopping capabilities, developed in collaboration with several major retailers, including Walmart. While both platforms aim to enhance customer interactions and streamline transactions, Walmart’s new head of AI, Daniel Danker, highlighted a key distinction. He stated that Gemini facilitates a more integrated transaction process compared to ChatGPT. During his appearance at the ICR Conference in Orlando, Danker explained, "We’re essentially having their AI agent, Gemini, partner with our AI agent to create a unified shopping journey." He illustrated this by describing how Walmart’s shopping assistant can activate within Gemini to assist users in completing their purchases seamlessly. Google has established new standards that enable AI agents from different companies to communicate effectively. According to Danker, this partnership allows Walmart to connect a customer’s chat session with their existing profile and shopping history, enhancing the overall experience. He noted, "For the most part, our customers aren't just customers; they're often members," referencing the benefits of Walmart's subscription service, Walmart+. Danker anticipates that this innovative approach to agentic shopping will help Walmart attract sales from customers who might not have initially intended to make a purchase. For example, if a user seeks advice on removing a wine stain from a specific carpet, a relevant cleaning product could be conveniently added to their shopping cart for delivery. By collaborating with both ChatGPT and Gemini, Walmart aims to strengthen its position in the AI marketplace. Analysts from Morgan Stanley project that agentic sales could contribute an impressive $115 billion to U.S. e-commerce by 2030. Danker believes that Walmart’s established reputation for affordability and its enhanced delivery capabilities will provide a significant advantage. He emphasized, "The most important currency in an agentic shopping world is actually trust and affordability. Without trust and affordability, it’s very difficult for customers to hand the wheel to someone else and expect that the right thing will happen." Danker also mentioned that Walmart’s extensive product range and competitive pricing ensure its frequent presence in shopping recommendations from both Gemini and ChatGPT, meeting various customer needs effectively.
