Walmart is set to transform the online shopping experience by collaborating with OpenAI, enabling users to browse and purchase products directly through ChatGPT, the highly popular AI chatbot. This strategic move aims to position Walmart ahead of its rival, Amazon, in the competitive online retail landscape. In a recent announcement, Walmart's CEO Doug McMillon revealed that the current online shopping interface, which predominantly relies on a basic search bar and a long list of item responses, is about to undergo a significant upgrade. The integration of AI technology promises to deliver a multimedia shopping experience, offering users more personalized responses tailored to their needs. The new feature is expected to launch this fall, providing a vast selection of Walmart products, including clothing, entertainment, and food items from third-party vendors. Following this rollout, offerings from Sam's Club will also become available. Walmart plans to utilize OpenAI's newly introduced "Instant Checkout" tool, allowing users to complete purchases directly within the ChatGPT interface. This partnership marks ChatGPT's most substantial collaboration in the shopping sector to date. OpenAI has previously joined forces with platforms like Etsy and is preparing to include Shopify-based businesses, such as Kim Kardashian’s Skims and the athleisure brand Vuori, in its offerings. For Walmart, this collaboration represents a significant step forward in its AI strategy, which has faced challenges in keeping pace with Amazon. Walmart's AI initiatives began with the launch of Sparky in 2025, a personal shopping assistant introduced over a year after Amazon's Rufus. As tech companies continue to invest heavily in AI, with commitments reaching hundreds of billions for advancements in data centers and semiconductor orders, questions remain regarding the industry's profitability despite soaring stock prices. While the financial details of the OpenAI partnership have not been disclosed, Walmart’s stock saw a nearly 3% increase following the announcement.
