Walmart deploying millions of internet sensors to track goods from warehouse to Supercenter

Walmart is set to transform its supply chain operations across the U.S. with the deployment of millions of ambient Internet of Things (IoT) sensors. This initiative, powered by technology from Wiliot, marks a significant milestone as the first extensive rollout of ambient IoT in the retail industry. These innovative sensors, which require no batteries, harvest energy from various ambient sources such as radio waves and light, representing an evolution in IoT and RFID technologies that promises enhanced scalability and reduced costs. The retail giant plans to implement approximately 90 million sensors nationwide by the end of 2026, focusing initially on the U.S. market before considering global expansion. These sensors will provide real-time tracking of pallets, allowing Walmart to maintain precise insights into inventory management, including the exact location of merchandise and ownership status. The ambient IoT sensors will capture crucial data such as temperature, location, humidity, and dwell time. By integrating this information with Walmart's sophisticated artificial intelligence systems, the company aims to significantly enhance supply chain efficiency, improve inventory accuracy, and ensure compliance within cold chain logistics. Greg Cathey, senior vice president of transformation and innovation, stated the goal is to have these systems operational in around 500 locations by the end of the year, with a broader rollout planned for 2026. This deployment will span 4,600 Walmart Supercenters, Neighborhood Markets, and over 40 distribution centers, generating high-resolution supply chain data that feeds directly into Walmart's AI infrastructure. Cathey highlighted that the data from these sensors will improve delivery proofs, aid in replenishment decisions, and provide real-time visibility of inventory. The introduction of ambient IoT technology is significant as it supplies a new data stream to AI systems, enhancing their effectiveness in optimizing supply chain operations. By automating alerts and reducing manual checks, associates will be able to focus more on customer service, leading to an improved shopping experience. Though specific cost-saving figures were not disclosed, Walmart anticipates benefits from heightened supply chain efficiency and improved inventory management. This development is expected to lead to better product availability and consistency for customers. Experts note that ambient IoT is set to reshape the landscape of supply chain management by providing real-time data that reflects actual conditions, in contrast to the outdated information previously relied upon. The ambient IoT initiative has also gained momentum with the establishment of a new alliance aimed at promoting an open ecosystem for manufacturers and users of ambient IoT technology. This collaboration seeks to advance communication technologies, addressing the limitations of traditional battery-operated devices to promote sustainable and efficient solutions.
