Waffles eat Bluesky

Waffles eat Bluesky

In recent days, the social media platform Bluesky has been engulfed in an unexpected wave of posts centered around waffles. This peculiar trend appears to have originated from a playful jab by user Jerry Chen, who mocked the self-righteousness often found on social media with the quip: "(bluesky user bursts into Waffle House) OH SO YOU HATE PANCAKES??" Bluesky's CEO, Jay Graber, responded to this with a nod of approval, stating, "Too real. We’re going to try to fix this. Social media doesn’t have to be this way." The situation took a turn when another user inquired about the status of controversial writer Jesse Singal on the platform. Graber's only reply was a whimsical, "WAFFLES!" Singal, who has faced significant backlash for his views on trans issues, previously sparked considerable debate within the Bluesky community. A Change.org petition urging his ban garnered over 28,000 signatures, making him one of the most blocked users until he was recently surpassed by Vice President JD Vance. Graber later addressed the criticism surrounding moderation on Bluesky, stating, "Harassing the mods into banning someone has never worked. And harassing people in general has never changed their mind." In a lighthearted yet pointed manner, she shared a photo of waffles, echoing Singal's similar post. The ongoing dialogue reveals a deeper rift between the platform's leadership and its more vocal users. This tension has been evident in the response to updated community guidelines and the perception that Bluesky is quick to penalize marginalized users while being lenient towards larger accounts like Singal's. Many users feel this disparity represents a betrayal of the community ideals that initially characterized Bluesky. One user, Katie Tightpussy, speculated that the leadership might be growing weary of managing a social media platform they never intended to create. She suggested that Bluesky's executives should consider divesting their social media responsibilities to refocus on their original mission. Graber, in her responses, has often downplayed any specific political affiliation for Bluesky, instead highlighting the decentralized nature of the platform that encourages users to create their own moderation systems. Amid this controversy, Graber has emphasized the concept of "decentralization acceleration," stating, "We’re system architects at core. We built a decentralized network so you could run your own moderation." This reflects her vision for a platform where users have the flexibility to seek alternatives if they find the leadership unsatisfactory. Notably, Graber once remarked in Bluesky's founding documents that "the company is a future adversary," hinting at an awareness of the conflicts that could arise as the platform evolves.
