In a significant stride towards vehicle safety, Volvo has introduced its cutting-edge all-electric EX60, leveraging insights gained from previous models like the EX30 and EX90. Built on the innovative SPA3 platform designed exclusively for battery-electric vehicles, the EX60 offers an impressive range of up to 400 miles (643 km) and features rapid charging technology that can provide 173 miles (278 km) of range in just 10 minutes. One of the standout features of the EX60 is its remarkable multi-adaptive safety belt. This advancement follows Volvo's long-standing commitment to safety, dating back to the invention of the modern three-point seat belt by engineer Nils Bohlin in 1959, a design that has since been shared globally. At the Volvo Cars Safety Center, the company conducts daily crash tests on new vehicles to explore and enhance passenger protection while pushing the boundaries of safety technology. Mikael Ljung Aust, Senior Safety Technical Leader at Volvo, emphasizes the importance of accommodating diverse body types in safety solutions. With two decades of experience, he notes that while testing can often be fine-tuned to fit particular individuals, real-world driving behaviors are much more uniform. “We’re conditioned to exhibit similar automated responses while driving, which simplifies collision prevention,” Ljung Aust explains. “However, injury prevention is where the adaptive seat belt plays a crucial role. Our goal is to ensure that everyone, regardless of their size or weight, receives equal protection in the event of a crash.”
