Volvo is embarking on a significant transformation as it aims to transition to a fully electric lineup by 2040. In pursuit of this goal, the company has announced exciting developments for its North American facility located in Ridgeville, South Carolina. Since commencing operations in South Carolina in 2017 with the production of the S60 sedan, Volvo has evolved its manufacturing strategy. While the S60 production ceased last summer, the Ridgeville plant has shifted focus to producing the electric EX90 SUV and the Polestar 3, both of which align with the company’s electrification goals. Despite the plant's capacity to manufacture 150,000 vehicles annually, it hasn't been running at full throttle. In a strategic move earlier this July, Volvo disclosed plans to commence production of the next-generation midsize XC60 in South Carolina, a decision driven by market dynamics and tariff considerations. Now, the automaker is set to introduce another model to its production line—a hybrid vehicle that is expected to debut before 2030. Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo's CEO, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating, "Our investment plans once again reinforce our long-term commitment to the US market and our manufacturing operations in South Carolina." This year marks a significant milestone for Volvo, celebrating 70 years since its entry into the US market. With over 5 million vehicles sold, the company is poised to expand its footprint in the American automotive landscape in the years ahead.
