The Volvo EX30 Cross Country review: A victim of geopolitics

In recent years, the size of new vehicles has been steadily increasing in the US, with an average growth of an inch in width and 22 inches in length from 2013 to 2023. This trend presents a paradox; while larger cars may offer a sense of security to their drivers, they also consume more energy and can have severe consequences in collisions. Enter the Volvo EX30, a compact electric crossover that champions efficiency and safety without compromising on performance. With a minimal carbon footprint, the EX30 seemed to be the ideal vehicle for modern consumers. Unfortunately, Volvo’s recent decision to halt imports of this model to the US casts a shadow over its promising attributes. With the order books now closed, only around 1,200 units remain in inventory before they disappear from the market. Initially unveiled in 2023, the EX30 generated excitement with its competitive starting price of $34,950 for the rear-wheel drive variant, making it one of the more affordable electric vehicles available—especially considering Volvo's luxury branding. However, the landscape shifted dramatically due to geopolitical factors. The EX30's attractive pricing was based on its production in Zhangjiakou, China, but the Biden administration's imposition of hefty tariffs on Chinese-made vehicles in 2024, followed by similar actions from the Trump administration, forced Volvo to rethink its strategy. This led to a shift in production to their Ghent, Belgium facility for cars destined for the US market. Unfortunately, European-manufactured vehicles still face a 25% tariff, driving the starting price of the EX30 up to $40,345, including destination charges, for the rear-wheel drive model, and $46,345 for the all-wheel drive version. Thus, while the Volvo EX30 holds great potential as a sustainable and safe vehicle, external trade challenges have severely impacted its availability and affordability in the US market.
