Volkswagen ends ID.4 production in Tennessee to build Atlas SUV

Volkswagen is making a significant shift at its Chattanooga, Tennessee facility, as the production of the ID.4 electric vehicle comes to a halt. This change is part of a broader strategy resulting from the company's compliance with the Dieselgate settlement established with the Department of Justice in 2016, which mandated the local production of electric vehicles. By 2021, the ID.4 was proudly rolling off the assembly line in the U.S., marking a new chapter for VW in the electric vehicle market. However, as of mid-April, the ID.4 will no longer be manufactured at this site, as the assembly line will be reconfigured to produce the newly unveiled gasoline-powered Atlas SUV. The ID.4 received a warm welcome upon its launch, achieving a notable 31 percent increase in sales in 2025 compared to the previous year. Yet, this momentum took a drastic turn following the discontinuation of the clean vehicle tax credit by the Trump administration, leading to a staggering 62 percent year-on-year drop in ID.4 sales in the subsequent months. In a strategic pivot, Volkswagen is banking on the renewed demand for gas-powered SUVs. This decision comes amid rising fuel prices, which have surged over a dollar per gallon in recent weeks due to geopolitical tensions. Despite the challenges, the Atlas SUV stands as VW’s second-best-selling vehicle in the U.S., and the company aims to have the next generation of the Atlas available in dealerships by this fall.
