Vodafone Idea (Vi) has reported an increase in net subscribers for the second month in a row, indicating potential stabilization within its user base, as per the latest data from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). In March 2026, Vi added 102,899 subscribers, following a gain of 21,927 in February, marking a significant turnaround for the telecom operator that has faced considerable subscriber losses in recent years due to fierce competition from Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. A notable factor contributing to this growth is Vi's expansion into rural areas. The company welcomed 192,211 new rural subscribers in March, reflecting a stronger foothold outside urban markets. Furthermore, the gains were widespread across 15 telecom circles, indicating a geographically diverse recovery. Notably, Gujarat emerged as a leading contributor with 101,748 new users, while Karnataka followed closely with 100,701 additions. Other regions, including Bihar (57,452), Uttar Pradesh-East (47,869), and Tamil Nadu (42,455), also showed significant increases. Circles such as Kerala, Maharashtra, Punjab, and Haryana also reported steady growth, further reinforcing the positive trend. Vi's recent strategic initiatives seem to be playing a crucial role in this revival. The company has been investing in network enhancements and diversifying its product offerings to boost customer retention and attract new users. Its unique plans, such as the "Nonstop Hero" plan that provides unlimited 4G data and "Super Hero" packs offering unlimited usage for half a day, are resonating particularly well with cost-conscious consumers. Additionally, Vi has ramped up its 5G rollout, announcing the expansion into 90 new cities, which will bring its total 5G presence to 133 cities by May 2026. This move aligns with its strategy to maintain competitiveness in a market where high-speed data services are crucial for subscriber growth. On a broader scale, the Indian telecom sector continues to expand. By the end of February 2026, the wireless subscriber base, which includes both mobile and fixed wireless access connections, reached 1.2733 billion, an increase from 1.2663 billion in January. However, competition remains fierce, with Bharti Airtel adding 5.088 million subscribers in February, and Reliance Jio reporting a net gain of 1.741 million, primarily in mobile connections. Industry analysts are watching Vi's recent performance closely. Sustained growth over several months could signal a meaningful turnaround, particularly if it is bolstered by ongoing network investments and enhanced service quality. While Reliance Jio and Tata Teleservices have continued to grow their wireline subscriber bases, state-run MTNL has seen a significant decline, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by legacy providers. For Vodafone Idea, the critical question is whether it can maintain this recovery trajectory. While two consecutive months of subscriber gains are promising, long-term stability will hinge on consistent network improvements, effective execution of its 5G plans, and the ability to compete on both pricing and service quality. For now, the latest TRAI data provides a hopeful signal: Vi may be starting to regain its footing in India's highly competitive telecom landscape.
